The procession of the bull motifs is an important ritual of the local temple festival (പുത്തനാല്‍ക്കല്‍ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം) which also marks the beginning of the festival season in the valluvanad(വള്ളുവനാട്) region of my home state - Kerala.

The Seasons
Taken at a view point half-way up Mount Washington Auto Road in New Hampshire.

Mount Washington is the highest peak in Northeastern United States and on a clear day provides a view of the Boston City (~100 miles south) and the sunrise in the Atlantic is supposed to be an amazing view (though we couldn't see it!). This place also holds the record for the highest gust wind recorded on the earth's surface - at 231 mph (372 km/h) on the afternoon of April 12, 1934. But on a any given day, you can feel the wind gusting anywhere between 50 - 70 mph.

Given the notoriously erratic and unpredictable the weather up there, we couldn't make it to the top of the summit on that day. It was 15F (-9.5C) at 11AM in the morning and the wind chill making it 5F (-15C)

We went on a drive to Washington DC during the last weekend to watch the Cherry Blossoms. The rainy morning worried us a bit, but my late afternoon the skies cleared up. The blossoms were mostly washed out by the rain, but the beautiful sunny weather that followed for the rest of the evening provided a very good photo opportunity for me.

Hurdles!

This photo was taken on Jan 17th 2009 right outside my house. While I clicked the photo, I just wanted to find a constrasting background to highlight the ice formation; but now my mind has worked out a little more symbolism for this photograph -

The path to progressive future and the biggest hurdle to that - the political fraternity, sharp as a knife, enough to kill people, but formed using simple water - if not for the right environment, it is just "nothing" - very similar to our governing fraternity - And the most important, lies down as the hurdle to development instead of facilitating.

The High Point Statepark is one of the State Parks bordering the three states of New Jersey, New York & Pennsylvania. We had been there last weekend with some family friends & was pleasantly surprised to have a very pleasant weather and less crowd. This place is well known for its fall colors and on top of the peak, there was a light snow cover.

This lonely bench & the tree next to it caught my attention and it looked as if the bench very much liked the solitude surrounding the place... ;)

Lake Hopatcong

Lake Hopatcong is the largest freshwater body in the state of New Jersey, USA, approximately 4 square miles (10 km²) in area. The lake is located in the mountains of northern New Jersey, north of Netcong and along the border between Sussex and Morris counties.

We made an unplanned trip to this place today (24 Aug 08) and was wondering how we missed this place which is just 22 miles from our place for a whole 1 year! And as I mentioned, there was a lot of activities & since we were not prepared, we just fooled around for some time & returned.

It was a bright sunny day & I got this good shot of the white clouds on a bright sunny day with the backdrop of the lake.

The Bushkill falls

Tucked away 60 miles from Morristown NJ (where we currently stay) in the Delaware watergap is the Bushkill falls. A privately owned land with a sequence of waterfalls and trekking trails, it is a perfect chill out place for half a day. Though we had visited this place earlier last year, our friends Jeffrey & Nisha came over the last weekend from South Jersey to visit this place & we joined them. This time, I made sure that I had time to click away some photos.

This is the photo of the main falls taken from the wooden walk way across the falls. Shot using my Nikon D50 on a cloudy afternoon using the wooden rails as a stand (I did not carry the tripod fearing to carry it all along - if we decide to trek)

A drive through the old cities of Pennsylvania - and you will amazed by the remniscants of the age old technology & architecture. The First Continental Congress drew up and signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia (The capital city of Pennsylvania), but when that city was captured by the British, the Continental Congress escaped westward, meeting at the Lancaster courthouse and then to York. There they drew up the Articles of Confederation that formed 13 independent colonies into a new nation. Later, the Constitution was written, and Philadelphia was once again chosen to be cradle to the newly found American Nation.

This photo was taken during one of those drives through Pennsylvania near the Poconos Mountains in the Delaware Water Gap. Cropped & touched up using Adobe Photoshop to remove the noise in the surroundings.

It had been some time now since I took out & dusted my camera and clicked a few pictures. This one is an old one from my collection that I clicked at the Madison fair in October 2007.

Sometimes I get into a lazy bubble where I dont feel interested in anything - mostly caused by heavy work load at office or some thing like that. It would be really difficult for me to break that shell and get active again... many a time, even after the work load goes down, I continue to be in the lazy mood...

This one was clicked using my Nikon D50, exposure 1/30th of a sec, Aperture f/4.5

I liked the pitch black background with the fireworks fore ground lighting up the sky!

Chinese Fishing Net (ചീനവല)

The only place where the Chinese fishing nets are used outside china might be in the coastal state of Kerala in India. They make a good subject for evening photography due to the backwaters where they are normally installed & the interesting structure.

Some additional details from Wiki on Chinese Fishing Nets:-
The Chinese fishing nets (Cheena vala) of Fort Kochi (Fort Cochin) in the City of Kochi (Cochin), in the Indian State of Kerala, are fixed land installations for an unusual form of fishing — shore operated lift nets. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20 m or more across. Each structure is at least 10 m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen.

The system of counterweights is the most ingenious. Rocks, each 30 cm or so in diameter are suspended from ropes of different lengths. As the net is raised, some of the rocks one-by-one come to rest on a platform thereby keeping everything in balance.

It is known as a "skyway" because it travels high above the meadows to avoid drawbridges across the Passaic and Hackensack Rivers, bridging each at a height of 135 feet (41.1 m). It also crosses over the New Jersey Turnpike, many local roads, and several rail lines. The skyway is named for General Kazimierz Pułaski, the Polish military leader who assisted in training and commanding Continental Army troops in the American Revolutionary War.

Interestingly, The speed limit on the skyway is 45 miles per hour (72 km/h),but is not generally followed because there is nowhere for police to pull over speeders.

Chill-out Zone!

This photo was taken in June 2008 at the Kumbalangi Model Village in Kochi, Kerala, India. We were on a 2 week long vacation in Kerala meeting our family & did not forget to spend some time for ourselves. Kumbalangi is one of the Islands that make the Corporation of Kochi & the status of 'Model Village' has been conferred upon this village for its efforts & focus on tourism in the way of Home Stay suites. The houses there double up to welcome tourists to stay with them in extensions of their own house - homely food, good environment & the chill-out - all in one package.

This photo is the relaxation area that the Home Stay where we visited had built - And that extends into the back waters... A place to chill out with a drink & snacks, make your own catch for the dinner in terms of fish or even crabs... Overall, a wonderful experience.

Spin Wheel - A Nostalgia!

I made this traditional spin wheel which turns with a ticking sound using a machchinga (A coconut that is not mature) & sticks taken out of the coconut-palm leaves. These used to be the typical toys that we had, as children, during my childhood days.

And it was my turn to make one for my kiddo when we went home for a vacation during June 2008. She was amazed by the spin wheel & played with it until it gave away by itself. Photo taken on 15th June 8PM, using Sandeep's Nikon D40x, a whopping 30 sec exposure and an f-stop of f/5.3

Sharks!

This photo was taken in the Baltimore Aquarium. There were a lot of mid-sized sharks in the Shark tank and they kept on moving. I was trying to get a hold of a good shot of one of them with the contraint of low (read as no) light & the constantly moving sharks. I was patient enough to wait for almost 15-20 mins with my camera focussed on this area where the lighting was appropriate while this one came right under the light, stood still for a couple of seconds staring at me & then moved on!

I did not think twice of the opportunity, clicked a couple of snaps & this is the best among them.

Luray Caverns

Luray Caverns, originally called Luray Cave, is a large, celebrated commercial cave discovered in 1878. The underground cavern system is generously adorned with speleothems (columns, mud flows, stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, mirrored pools, etc). The caverns are noted for the Great Stalacpipe Organ, a lithophone made from solenoid fired strikers that tap stalactites of various sizes to produce tones similar to those of xylophones, tuning forks, or bells.

The Caverns are situated in the Shenandoah Valley just to the east of the Allegheny Range of the Appalachian Mountains in Luray, Virginia. The temperature inside the caverns is uniformly 54 °F (12 °C) through out the year!

We along with Jeffrey's family drove down to Virginia during the last long weekend on account of the Veterans Day. I was all geared up with my tripod because I knew that I would be clicking away inside the cave & really hated to click such beauties with flash. Apart from the natural beauty, they had been well mantained & strategically lighted to enhance the viewers experience & to make the trip a memorable one.

Tulips

Tulipa commonly called Tulip is a genus of about 100 species of bulbous flowering plants. The native range of the species includes southern Europe, north Africa, and Asia from Anatolia and Iran in the east to northeast of China. A number of species and many hybrid cultivars are grown in gardens, used as pot plants or as fresh cut flowers.

Tulip Festivals are held in the Netherlands, Spalding (England) and in North America every May. Tulips are now also popular in Australia, and several festivals are held during September and October in the Southern hemisphere's spring. The world's largest permanent display of tulips, although open to the public only seasonally, is in Keukenhof, in the Netherlands.

The welcome of the Spring after the harsh winter weather in the United States are welcomes by the Tulip festivals & the Cherry Blossoms. They add a lot of color to the environment and that is a real welcome after the dull grey & white of the winter. These photos were taken from the Longwood gardens (arboretum) in Pennysylvania on 4th May 2008. It was a nice day out with sunshine & cool breeze.

I was talking to a friend of mine whom I reconnected after a very long time (thanks to Orkut & Linked In), who himself is an artist & he was commenting about my photos in this blog. While I got more than a couple of constructive feedback on how can I improvise the composition and the lighting, he asked me this question out of nowhere...

Have somebody told you that a beautiful piece of work in photography has to be on precision focus on a certain object? Why not try to explore the canvas like a painter? Why not make use of the longer exposure and lightng to your advantage to make a beautiful piece of work?

I tried this on a rainy February evening, in the twilght, with a longer exposure & a smaller F-stop, & purposely made a brush motion during the exposure. I think it came out beautiful, though it does not fit into the 4 walls of photography rules...

Knowledge, Love & the Eternal Bonding

This is not my original idea of a still life; but a very powerful representation of the fraternity of knowledge, love and eternal bonding. I happened to see a very similar photo somewhere else, and more than the perfection of the photograph, what caught my attention was the powerful message that this depiction sends out.

I recreated the still-life at home on the thurday evening (31st January 2008), shot it with my Nikon D50; The tablelamp provided the lighting.

Fall/Autumn is one of the most colorful seasons. The whole trees and plants around would change to a beautiful palette of colors in a variety of shades of red, yellow & green. The leaves would start shedding after a few weeks to prepare for the harsh winter days to come.

We woke up today morning to see the whole area covered with 2-3 inches of snow! This is the first snow in Morristown this year. Time to take out the shovels to clean the car everyday - and also to get some warm-up exercise. Though not intentional, I had taken the window view from our apartment a few days before it snowed & after it snowed (I noticed this when Vishal pointed out this last day). I tried to create a collage & failed - so posting them as separate ones.

Our Jack-o'-lantern for Halloween!

A jack-o'-lantern, sometimes also spelled Jack O'Lantern, is a carved pumpkin or turnip. Typically the top is cut off, and the inside flesh then scooped out. An image (usually a monstrous face) is carved onto the outside surface, and the lid replaced. During the night, a candle is placed inside to illuminate the effect. Jack-o'-lanterns are associated with the holiday Halloween.

Halloween originated from the Pagan festival Samhain, celebrated among the Celts of Ireland and Great Britain. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century. Halloween is now celebrated in several parts of the western world, most commonly in Ireland, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the United Kingdom.

As a part of Amiya's school activities, she had pumpkin picking and bought home this pumpkin & wanted halloween! Initially I did not know what she meant & then later realized what she is asking for. Equipped with a kitchen knife, we attempted making this jack-o-lantern & this is what it turnedout to be.

Tropical Rain forest

Rainforests are home to two-thirds of all the living animal and plant species on the planet. It has been estimated that many hundreds of millions of new species of plants, insects and microorganisms are still undiscovered. Tropical rain forests are also called the "jewels of the earth", and the "world's largest pharmacy" because of the large amount of natural medicines discovered there. They are characterized by heavy rainfall, thick lower cover and they are pretty humid which makes them the ideal scenario for flora & fauna to thrive.

The Madison Town Fair - Fire works

We had been to the fireworks that concluded the Madison town fair at the Madison Highschool grounds. Madison is the neighbouring city to Morristown (The fact is that there should be atleast a 50 Madisons in the United States - of varying sizes). We chanced upon this when we had been to Kushal's 3rd birthday party at the Vijays' and one of the guest - Paul - made a mention of the fireworks.

At the end of the fireworks, I realized that I am still a novice in photographing fireworks - Only a few decent ones came out out of the 50 odd photos I clicked. The very less response time available for focussing and the timing of the click are the things that I found that I should be working on. There were a couple of very good photos - if not for the bright spot of the blast in some and the smoke after the blast in some other... Way to go forward for the photographer in mine...

Meanwhile look at the few of them that came out decently well...

The American Rapids

We finally made our trip to visit "Niagaraeswaran" during the weekend of 15th and 16th September. We took a conducted tour by a chinese operator and really experienced the "Jackie Chan" trip :) The view of falls was good (could have been better from Canada, but for Visa & other documentation hassles), and I was really amazed by the sheer volume of water that goes down the 3 falls (Horse shoe falls, American falls & Bridal veil falls) that constitute the Niagara.

This is the photo of the American Rapids which is just before where the water plunges down the American falls. The sunday was cold; though bright with the sun out and the yellow flowers with the American rapids in the background made this a nice view.

Deep blue sea

This photo was taken from the Adventure aquarium in Camden, NJ. This was a visual effect that they have created that resembles a ship wreckage with the sharks foating around. It was a dark alley over there and I was not sure whether this would come up as a good snap. And after a couple of trials with the shutter speed, it did.

Stephenson's Rocket

This is a replica of the modern Steam Locomotive - Widely known as Stephenson's Rocket. This photo was taken from the Benjamin Franklin museum of Science in Philadelphia. I personally felt that it was too early to take my 2 year old daughter to this place, but if there is an opportunity, I would definitely like to bring her here after 7-8 years. It kind of took me back to my highschool and graduation days - Steam engine, Berneoulli's theorm (hope I spelled it right :) ), The four compartments of our heart, what is an air-lift, piezzo & pyro electricity et all...

This replica was placed with a special kind of lighting and also to allow the white light to flow in through the window. I found the lighting pretty interesting and tried to capture this photo in real colors.

Sailing up the Hudson river

This photo was taken from a cruise ship on Hudson river on a hot, humid and foggy afternoon in downtown Manhattan. I was on a sight seeing visit to New York and we boarded a downtown cruise ship to see the popular attractions without much of physical strain :) The color of the water, sky, and this yacht made this perfect blend of blueish tint and a super snap.

We went out to see the Bushkill falls on the weekend of august 18th 2007 and decided to take the trekking route. It is a small stream of water, definitely not as big as a river that eventually joins the Delaware river. This place is located in the Delaware Watergap in the state of Pennisylvania, Unites States. We took the trekking trail along side the stream. I was trying to get a longer exposure of the waterstream but the lighting was too bright for that. Though I was not really successful in getting there, this came out as a decent snap.

The rain tree - Abode of Knowledge & Maturity

This is not really a "rain tree" - but in principle, the way this tree stood caught my attention because it really signifies the meaning of the raintree: Short and elegant, small yet providing shade to a large area and truly signifies that what really matters is not size or looks.

The rain tree (grown in tropical India, especially Bengal) gets its name from the moisture it collects on the ground under the tree, largely the discharge of cicadas feeding on the leaves

During my second weekend in New Jersey, me, Gautham, Ben & his wife went exploring New York city. As any new arrivals in the city, the first target was the empire state building. The Empire state building was the tallest building in the world from 1931 to 1972 with 102 floors reaching upto1250 feet and the spire extending the height to 1472 feet. While we were looking at the New York city from the topmost terrace floor, these doves caught my attention. It has been known well that (like Mumbai) there are lot of doves in New York, attributed to the Victorian style of the buildings (Though Americans hate that comparison). This pair caught my attention; roosting at this height. Sounds like a perfect love story? Yes; and I clicked through...

This photo was taken during a weekend trip to my home town, Nellaya. We decided to drive down this time from Bangalore through Mysore, Mudumalai, Vazhikadavu, Nilambur & Perinthalmanna. The weather was amazing, surprisingly roads were very good & neat; recently tarred; and an enjoyable experience overall.

We stopped in the Nilambur forest for some stretching and this bamboo grove caught my attention. The greenery was very soothing for the eyes and my camera captured the green as it is...

Rhythm divine - Sequel to Little toes

Though a sequel to Little toes, there is a story behind this...

We bought this drum from a road side vendor for Rs. 100/- (Obviously after a hard bargain...) and the idea was to gift it to my daughter so that she can have some fun time with it. Music & musical instruments are very close to my heart and I play a few of them. I personally feel that it enables people to live very close to their heart and more importantly be very human and compassionate to others. Recently I was fiddling with this drum to try the different tension levels (some habits die hard!) and figured out that it is a genuine one made out of jackfruit tree cylinder and buffalo skin and when properly tuned, it reverberates very close to Chenda (An instrument -Asuravaadyam - played in the temples in Kerala during festivals).

I feel sorry for having done so much of the hard bargain and was thinking about his situation that would have driven him to sell it to us for a meagre 100/-, if not anything I should have valued the art piece and given him a fair deal.

Little toes

I have started wondering whether I am running out of ideas; having a small baby at home and an age old car prevents me from going on long drives and I am sick of clicking in and around my house, though it is on the outskirts! We returned home yesterday to find that the power lines have snapped and it is going to be a dark night, that too on amavasi (new moon day). The backup light was on, my kiddo had thrown down her shoes and this is the outcome of an experiment with light. Taken on 16 May 2007, an evening without electricity!

Poor souls for some display

I was on this weekend trip to Bannnerghatta National park with my daughter so that I could show her some of our brothers in the wild. We opted for a Lion & Tiger Safari to have a look at them in their natural surroundings. And I was in for a rude shock when the safari started. All they have was poor caged souls with a provision of driving through the cages. The only saving grace was that the cages were huge to the size of a few acres. And what kind of "Safari" is that? I felt so sorry and sad for these poor souls who are caged in their so called "Natural Environment". Extent to which people go to make a quick buck.

The Mysore Palace

The photo of Mysore palace has been taken umpteen number of times by various photographers (professional & others) and this was my turn :) I took this photo during August 2006 when our dear friends Jobin & Susha had come down to meet us and we made a trip to Mysore. Taken during a humid afternoon, the color composition & the clouds in the background made this snap a pretty good one to remember.

The current Mysore Palace – the fourth to occupy this site – was designed by the British architect Henry Irwin after its predecessor was destroyed in a fire in 1897 induced by lightning. The imposing building that stands today was completed in 1912, but it is believed that a Mysore Palace was established as part of a wooden fortress, by the royal family of Mysore, the Wodeyars, as early as the fourteenth century

Though it was the sub-zero temparatures around -10 deg celcius in Minneapolis, I felt like stepping out to have a gala time. This was again taken with my Nikon D50 in the autofocus mode.

This photograph was taken during a summer evening in 2003 at the Baga beach, North Goa. We were out for a holiday and I had this Samsung Fino 800 camera with me. I was experimenting with the lighting and I discovered the fact that photos taken in natural light, sans flash were the best. This is one among the best photographs that I had taken using an auto focus camera

This photo was taken during one of my vacations to my hometown, Nellaya. My brother took away the camera and wanted to experiment with it. Taken at around 8 AM during mid October, 2006 using the Nikon D50, I consider this as one of the best photographs ever taken with that camera.
